A compound manifold set, hoses, and manually calibrated temperature meter may be the first tools used by those graduating tech schools and those in their first few years in the field. Some techs have used them throughout their lifetime.

Its true, these tools don't run out of batteries and they are easily recalibrated manually. However, calibrated digital tools will give you even more accuracy and will help you solve the problem faster by giving you more numbers actively displayed. Remember, the most important tool you have is your mind so sharpen your knowledge and you will be able to diagnose well with any tools!

At a minimum, we need to be able to understand high side saturated temperature, low side saturated temperature, line temps, superheat, total superheat, and subcooling.

We need to picture the refrigeration cycle along with the prior measurements to understand what is happening in the system.

Its not only about charging, its about troubleshooting!
